Using the Sanford Guide
1. Notice the quick flip index at the back of the book. Also look inside the back cover at the index of terms
2. Examine each section. Notice the material in Table 1 explains a multitude of information based on the culture source by system. It gives the most likely organisms and the treatment.Look up Acute Sinusitis.
3. Look at the Table 2 in the Sanford Guide where the microorganisms and their sensitivity to antibiotics are found. Look up Staph. aureus. What antibiotics is it typically resistant to? (Follow it on all pages)
4. Go to Table 4 in the guide. Notice across the top of these pages the antibiotics are classified by family. Do you remember the mode of action of each family of drugs?
5. Look briefly at the section on anti-fungal agents, and anti-parasitic drugs agents, and then antiviral agents. These can be quickly turned to using the index on the back.
6. Now using the index on the back look up the antibiotic dosage and side effects and peruse them.
7. Imagine you have a patient that has necrotizing fasciitis. Using the index (at very end of book), list the major potential organisms associated with this in children. What is the typical treatment?
8. A patient has a wound culture taken. The following pathogens are isolated: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Methicillin Resistant Staph. Aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. Determine the best treatment and the potential side effects.
