UCLA Clinical Microbiology Lab Field Trip

Name___________

Objectives:

1. Exposure to lab techniques and pathogens that can not be done in our class lab.

2. Synthesis of information and skills learned in class with real world applications.

3. Introduction to medical technology.

4. Integration and application of the semester content and skills in a medical laboratory setting.

VIROLOGY

1. What are the three main techniques used to identify viruses from clinical material?

2.     What are the main viruses detected in this lab?

3.     What special considerations are necessary when taking “viral cultures”?

4.     Describe CPE as you saw it in the virology lab.

Mycobacteriology - AFB

1. What special considerations must be taken when culturing Mycobacteria (AFB)?

2.     What rapid methods of AFB detection are used at UCLA?

3.     What is the main species of AFB recovered and what type of patients tend to become infected with these AFB?

4.     Observe the room where AFB are cultured an examined. What biosafety level is this? What makes it that biosafety level?

PARASITOLOGY

1.     Which of the following parasites have been identified in this lab, write an example of each.

Protozoan parasites                                                             Arthropods (insects)

Helminthes (worms)                                                  Ova (worm eggs)

2.     What is the most commonly identified parasite at UCLA and how is it transmitted?

BACTERIOLOGY (Be sure to look at the blood cultures.)

1.     How does the lab decide what media to culture specimens on?

2.     What automated methods are used for the identification and sensitivities of bacteria?

3. How do the automated blood culture machines determine if a blood culture is positive?

4. UCLA has many transplant patients. What kind of infections are they most concerned with in these patients?

5. Describe the special conditions required for Anaerobic Microbiology.

SEROLOGY

 1. This portion of the lab uses serological techniques to identify organisms. Why aren’t they diagnosed or identified in bacteriology or virology?

2. In serology they are attempting to visualize a reaction between what two molecules?

3.     List 3 types of serological tests performed at UCLA.

MYCOLOGY (Look in the incubators at the number of fungal cultures)

1.     What are the main characteristics used to identify fungi.

2.     At what temperature and for how long are fungal cultures incubated?

3. What are the main types of fungi?
