  Virus Alert

For the past week or so, Bakersfield College has been experiencing a virus attack by "trojan" programs. Although the viruses do not appear to be destructive, they have caused considerable inconvenience to BC faculty and staff.

Until the problem is brought under control, please be aware of the following:

  • It is quite likely that you will see red-bordered messages on your screen that the Trend antivirus program has detected a virus on your computer. If the right side of that message says the virus was "quarantined," that indicates that your computer is correctly protecting you from attack. If you see such a message FOR THE FIRST TIME, please call the helpdesk at x4274 so that we can keep track of the virus' spread. You only need to do this once.
  • If the message says anything other than "quarantined," please let the helpdesk know IMMEDIATELY. This may indicate that your antivirus is not updating properly and may not be protecting you. We'll either "remote in" to your computer to check and disinfect your computer, or pay a personal visit to do so.
  • We also need to know immediately if the Trend antivirus icon (the little "blue ball" in the system tray at the lower right of your screen) shows anything other than a blue circle with a little "squiggle" running through it:

    If it shows as red instead of blue, or if it shows a diagonal slash, this indicates that it may not be protecting you:

  • Your antivirus should update itself periodically. You can update the antivirus manually by right-clicking on the blue ball, selecting "Update Now" from the pop-up menu, and then clicking on the "Update Now" button. This will assure that you have the most up-to-date antivirus files. If you try this and it doesn't work, call the helpdesk.
  • During the problem BCIS techs may be visiting your offices as they track down sources of the infection. We apologize in advance for the intrusion and will try to disrupt your routine as little as possible. BC was extremely lucky that this virus appears to be more of a nuisance than a destructive force. We can use it as a wake-up call to get ready for the next waves of viruses that are sure to be coming.
