Transitions
CLIP We are a group of sixteen students and two faculty members from Bakersfield College (BC) who came together for a year to study and learn together as a Community of Learning and Integrated Practice (CLIP). Both professors and 2 students live in Bakersfield, 11 students live in Delano, and 3 students live in Earlimart. Earlimart and Delano are both north of Bakersfield.
The 16 students claim ancestry from Mexico (12), the Philippines (2), Northern Europe (1), and India (1). Student birthplaces include Mexico, India, Hawaii, Kansas, and California. They are also a diverse group with respect to first language, age, gender, year in school, transfer status, marital status, gender, and parental status.
The two faculty members have Northern European heritage. Both were born in southern California. One faculty member is bilingual in English and Spanish. Both are female and married with children. Both teach mathematics at BC in Bakersfield and Delano.
From August 2005 to July 2006, CLIP members focused on the question "What can students learn about making successful transitions by attending professional conferences, visiting college campuses, surveying students, and studying college websites?" They met together frequently and explored issues related to the transitions students make from high school through college graduation. For CLIP members, these transitions include two or more BC campuses.
CLIP members attended professional conferences and visited college and university campuses. They used college websites and catalogs to research issues of college admission and transfer. CLIP members surveyed students and teachers about important issues. They organized and presented preliminary results at three professional math conferences during the fall 2005 semester. They continued to meet, review, and study issues of transfer throughout the year.
Findings were summarized, reviewed, and organized. Final products were designed and created to disseminate and help future students.Note: For names and more information about how we got involved select the History button above!
