AT the Bakersfield College

Environmental Horticulture Arboretum

Garden Fest, at Bakersfield College, beginning its 7th year, has become Bakersfield’s premiere springtime garden event. Garden Fest is an open house featuring the Environmental Horticulture and Agriculture programs that draws thousands of visitors to the Bakersfield College campus for a day of family fun.

In 2005, the Environmental Horticulture program held a plant sale.  The following year the name Garden Fest was adopted and the event had 7 participants. Each year the event grew larger and more popular, Garden Fest has now become an event attracting over 150 participants with vendor booths featuring gardening, pets, farmer’s market, cooking, outdoor leisure, arts & crafts, and environmentally friendly home improvement ideas. And for the car enthusiast the Bakersfield College Agriculture Ambassadors are hosting the “Mean and Green Car Show.” This event features Muscle cars and industry produced hybrid automobiles.

Garden Fest seminars and interactive projects will be presented at the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) Country Garden Stage by industry professionals who will inform and entertain attendees about gardening, floral design, pet care, cooking and more.  Scheduled this year and back by popular demand, will be a presentation by the California Living Museum, CALM, who will be bringing some of California’s wild animals for the kids to see and learn about.

Last year’s event had150 vendor booths composed of nursery, landscape, pet, and home improvement businesses, community gardening clubs, schools, Bakersfield College clubs and organizations, community organizations, forestry, parks and recreation, arts and crafts vendors, and green organizations to educate and inform the public.   Garden Fest also features a farmer’s market and food prepared by the outstanding BC Culinary Arts Department.

The Mission Statement for Garden Fest is:

Sprout the Spirit of Sustainability.

Cultivate an Appreciation for Agriculture.

Nourish the Compassion for Caring.

Unite our Community, our Country, our World.

Garden Fest is a one day event designed to raise awareness about the importance of agricultural education, promote environmental responsibility and sustainability, and to promote and unify our community.  And have fun while learning about it.
