Comparing
Subject vs.
Keyword Searching
|
Subject
Uses vocabulary from a thesaurus such as LSCH.
Search is limited to the
words in the subject heading.
Results are more
relevant and focused-- subject headings are assigned by humans.
Saves the researcher time
by drawing together all the information on the topic.
|
Keyword
Any word or combination
of words may be used as search terms .
Search may include author,
title, subjects, abstract and full-text depending on the options of the
database.
Results are less
relevant. Words may be used out of context or briefly mentioned in
the article.
Is useful for combining
concepts when there is no available subject heading.
